Sarah Broom wrote an eloquent memoir about her time growing up in a shotgun house in a neighborhood just outside of New Orleans. As the youngest of 12 children, she tells the story of her family's history, the neighborhood, and the house itself--woven with themes of class, race, inequality, shame, and sense of self. It's beautifully written.
Barb chiming in: I would only give it a 3. Beautifully written but I found I didn't really care about her. I liked the other characters more, like Ivory Mae. Maybe she was just being humble.
