This is based on the true story and lives of two women who literally live in a garbage dump in Cambodia. Sang Ly is doing all that she can to care for her chronically ill child (hard when you live in flaming trash 24/7!) and she finds out that the mean old rent collector can read. This is a book about love, family, survival, women, and reading. What the effect of learning to read and education can have on different people. It's so beautiful--I could read it again and again.
