Stephanie Land has written an intimate portrait of her struggle to survive as a single mother in a country where the system always seems to work against those who need it the most. This book is the epitome of taking a walk in someone else's shoes, and I hope that everyone who reads this considers not knowing a single thing about the strangers around you before passing judgments. Land's poignant storytelling makes you grateful she so tirelessly pursued her writing career through all of her hardships; her anecdotes tell a different side of America: poverty, homeless shelters, government assistance, all while subtly laying the groundwork for her readers that her situation is not only commonplace in the U.S., but could happen to anyone.
